Writing Prompt: A Call For Manners

In a time when “plz” passes for “please” and “thx” for “thank you,” it’s no wonder that people’s use of manners and etiquette has become, well, abbreviated.

But some things are worth holding on to. (No passing gas at the kitchen table is one off the top of my head, thankyouverymuch.) So I ask, what piece of etiquette will you never forsake? And from where or whom did you learn it?

This could be a tribute to Grandma. A social commentary. A plea for reform. It’s up to you.

We all look forward to reading your work. Simply, e-mail: editor@hopscotchforwomen.com. The deadline is up to you.

10 Ways To Make Your Life Greener Today

Even though Earth Day is two days away, you don’t need to wait to start helping the environment by going green. And further, going green doesn’t have to be a huge or costly ordeal. To prove this, here are 10 things you could do today to make Mother Nature proud.

1. Unplug your phone charger. Did you know that if you leave your charger plugged in all the time, you are wasting 95% of its electrical output? You’ll see these savings on your electric bill, too.

2 & 3. Take a shorter shower and turn the faucet off while brushing teeth. Stop throwing money down the drain by cutting back on wasted water.

4. Literally run errands. Instead of turning on your car to run to the post office or bank that’s just a mile or so away, take a jog. Exercise and helping the environment: win-win.

5. Only run the dishwasher when it’s full. Don’t waste water on only half- or quarter-full loads. Same with laundry.

6. Call your child’s school and request that they start sending e-mails to parents in place of sending home all that paperwork. Less clutter around the house and the school saves on its bottom line.

7. Don’t water your lawn. Instead, design your landscaping to be indigenous to your local climate.

8. Painting your home or a room inside your home? Go for paint with low VOCs. It’s virtually the same price as other paint and comes in all the colors you love. Its only lacking qualities are the harmful environmental effects and those migraine-inducing odors.

9. Reuse old towels, your children’s clothes, or linens as cleaning rags. Test green products from Method– you’re sure to love their amazingly ingenious eco-friendly solutions. Snag a discount here.

10. Plant a vegetable garden. And if you don’t have space for a garden, repurpose some flower boxes or planters to create a mini garden. Try cardboard egg cartons, the bottoms of milk jugs or plastic soda bottles, old shoes, or unusable pots and pans.

11. Bonus for good measure! Start paying your bills online. It’s safer than ever, ceases a sometimes unnecessary paper trail, and saves you the ever-increasing cost of a postage stamp.
