Writing Prompt: A Call For Manners

In a time when “plz” passes for “please” and “thx” for “thank you,” it’s no wonder that people’s use of manners and etiquette has become, well, abbreviated.

But some things are worth holding on to. (No passing gas at the kitchen table is one off the top of my head, thankyouverymuch.) So I ask, what piece of etiquette will you never forsake? And from where or whom did you learn it?

This could be a tribute to Grandma. A social commentary. A plea for reform. It’s up to you.

We all look forward to reading your work. Simply, e-mail: editor@hopscotchforwomen.com. The deadline is up to you.

Hop Tip

Hop Tip: Green Scene

It’s April, which is also the month in which we celebrate Earth Day. In honor of our glorious planet, all Hop Tips this month will be dedicated to improving our green lifestyles. If you haven’t already thought about going green, maybe it’s time. It’s not just a passing fad, but something we all need to take into consideration if we really love this planet.

Some easy ways to start:

1. Use reusable totes instead of plastic grocery bags when shopping. This goes for clothes or other types of shopping. Carrying your own reusable bag is easy, because it’s lightweight and compact. Just whip it out when necessary.

2. Recycle. This habit cannot be stressed enough. Even if your local city or town does not offer or require recycling, go out of your way to do it. You’ll instantly feel virtuous for doing something good.

3. Purchase fresh produce that is in season and only purchase what you’ll use within the following few days. Because, let’s face it, how much fresh produce do we throw out a week? And it is not only wasteful (Cue Mom, “There are children in Third World countries that would love to eat that”), but also when fruit and vegetables go to the landfill, they are packed in surrounding garbage so tightly, it’s difficult to biodegrade.

4. Plant some herbs and vegetables in your own garden or plant boxes. This not only guarantees fresh, organic produce, but saves on unnecessary packaging and CO2 emissions released during shipping.
