Writing Prompt: A Call For Manners

In a time when “plz” passes for “please” and “thx” for “thank you,” it’s no wonder that people’s use of manners and etiquette has become, well, abbreviated.

But some things are worth holding on to. (No passing gas at the kitchen table is one off the top of my head, thankyouverymuch.) So I ask, what piece of etiquette will you never forsake? And from where or whom did you learn it?

This could be a tribute to Grandma. A social commentary. A plea for reform. It’s up to you.

We all look forward to reading your work. Simply, e-mail: editor@hopscotchforwomen.com. The deadline is up to you.

Covet Corner: Statement Necklaces

By Britney Stevens

A look by Guess, $50

Every morning, we aspire to walk out our doors and make a statement. But let me guess: more often than not you stumble into your closet, stare at your outfit options, and over think how to make your clothes declare that you are on-trend and fabulous. Say no more.

Urban Outfitters's take, $28

Statement necklaces are an easy, effortless trend that was so adored in 2008, it has survived to sparkle in the sun this spring. But really, did these wonderful gems ever leave?

The statement necklace, as it should, speaks for itself. It flawlessly livens up a classic top or a simply-shaped dress–in one easy step.

A Forever 21 grosgrain style, $8.80

Personally, I love combining a pair of dark jeans, a simple v-neck tee, and a beautifully daring necklace. It’s one of the easiest, most uncomplicated accessories that can make a substantial difference in your outfit. Watch it transform your most understated ensemble to a chic day-wear look or a dressy, evening fashion.

But be careful not to overdo it. Use statement necklaces sparingly and be sure your outfit and other accessories are a bit more subdued. We don’t want you looking like you walked out of a Chico’s ad.

So, go ahead! No more running home midday to change, over-analyzing yourself into unflattering outfits, or even sacrificing style for comfort.

This is smart fashion, and take it from me, your friends will think you spent hours getting ready, when you really only mastered the simple lesson that less is more.
