Writing Prompt: A Call For Manners

In a time when “plz” passes for “please” and “thx” for “thank you,” it’s no wonder that people’s use of manners and etiquette has become, well, abbreviated.

But some things are worth holding on to. (No passing gas at the kitchen table is one off the top of my head, thankyouverymuch.) So I ask, what piece of etiquette will you never forsake? And from where or whom did you learn it?

This could be a tribute to Grandma. A social commentary. A plea for reform. It’s up to you.

We all look forward to reading your work. Simply, e-mail: editor@hopscotchforwomen.com. The deadline is up to you.

Week 10: Travel That Changed You

Katherine Lyon’s article “Getting Lost and Finding Myself in Germany” talks about traveling to a country at a young age and how that experience changed her life. Where have you traveled– locally and abroad– that has changed your life, for better and for worse?

Two-and-a-half years ago, my husband and I went to Italy (first time). It was a 14-day trip and we did it on our own. We used every method of transportation: planes, trains, automobiles. What an amazing experience! I am an such an American of 100% Italian descent. I never had any interest in seeing Italy and felt no real connection to my “homeland.” We went there in part to attend a destination wedding of my best friend, but in the end, I came home feeling very ITALIAN! I now eat foods I never ate before; I entertain differently; and I appreciate life in a calmer, more relaxed way. I STILL CANNOT COOK like an Italian, but I can dream!

  • I have only been to Europe once and it was before I was a New Yorker. I was constantly surprised at what I saw….it was CULTURE SHOCK. I need to go back again now that 12 years has passed and I have learned a lot more about the world. I think I would appreciate it more.

What freaked me out the most? When waiters seated others at our same table. Now I share tables with strangers all the time. I’m laughing at myself while writing about it.
